Since no costume is complete without some props, here is how
i made a Pulse Pistol, the holster and belt for pistol and Comm Badge.
The Pulse pistol:
Basically I took a piece of 2 x 10 i had laying around. Using some of the source pictures I have i drew the outline of the pistol and the major contours. I then cut it out using a hand saw, i forget what its called but its the one with the very thin blade. Anyhow, once it was cut out i put numbers on the various contours. 1 thru 4 to tell me the depth of that part, 4 being the deepest and 1 being no cut required. I then got the dremel with router bit out and routered out the number 2 areas. It should be noted that i have the router jig that goes on the dremel, its a life saver. I used some of the scraps from the 2x10 around the piece to keep it from dipping down too much. Once i had routered out the 3 and 4s (handle and a small portion near the muzzle being the only 4) i took a sharp knife and sliced some contours around the front half of the pistol, it gives it texture. I then switched to a sanding bit on the dremel and sanded out the grip and smoothed alot of the mistakes i made. Once satisfied with the sanding i spray painted it black. I wasn't really happy with the coat so i applied a flat black by brush, i think the thicker coat helps hide the wood grain better. 1 2
Holster and Belt:
The belt is just a 2" wide piece of nylon webbing with a plastic strap lock (like on backpacks) just like the ones on the vest only bigger. I painted the face of it silver. The holster is just a piece of leather folded up with small side pieces. I was trying to go for the season three holster look. 1 2
Comm Badge:
I was convinced this was gonna be difficult, but in fact it was probably the easiest prop. Get a small piece of brass, about the size of a business card. My local hobby shop sells strips of brass of the right width and long enough to make 4 badges for like 3 bucks. Trace the pattern on and cut it out with snips, watch the edges they are sharp. Since it has curves you may have to come at it from a few different angles. Now when i cut mine out one side of the brass had become scarred by the cutting, it became the back. I drilled two large holes, roughly the size of my index finger, and two smaller holes one on either side of the larger ones. The larger holes should over lap causing two points in the center of the badge. the smaller outer holes are for rivets. Now I took a small scrap of leather, painted it red and glued a piece of window screening on it and riveted it to the brass using some brass rivets i had. You could just forgo the small holes and just glue your backing right to the brass. Once it was assembled i polished the crap out of it with my dremel. In hindsight i should have polished it BEFORE assembling it, but oh well. I did put a layer of brass protector on it, its like a clear coat which should prevent corrosion for a while. On the back of the badge i glued a pin from one of those cheap name tags i had. 1 2 3
